Our Curriculum

At Blackmoor Park Infant School and Kindergarten, we welcome children from our Baby Room through to Year 2. From their earliest experiences with us, we provide a nurturing, inclusive, and stimulating environment where every child is encouraged to thrive. Our school vision — “Learning and Achieving Together” — is at the heart of everything we do. It reflects our commitment to working in partnership with children, families, and staff to ensure every child receives the best possible start to their education.

We promote five key Learning Behaviours throughout the school, helping to develop thoughtful, resilient, and motivated learners:

  • Listen

  • Respect

  • Interact

  • Keep Going

  • Think

High Expectations and Ambition for All

At Blackmoor Park, we set high expectations across all areas of learning. Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and designed to ensure that all pupils, including disadvantaged children and those with SEND, gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Our dedicated staff carefully plan and sequence learning so that children build on what they already know and work towards clearly defined end points in every subject. We ensure that all children, whatever their starting point, are supported and challenged to achieve their full potential.

A Broad, Balanced and Purposeful Curriculum

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that enables children to gain deep subject knowledge while also developing lifelong skills such as independence, creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking. Children are encouraged to apply what they have learned across different subjects and in different contexts, helping them to make meaningful connections in their learning. We ensure that pupils receive a quality education in all subjects, not just the core areas of English and maths.

Our curriculum gives careful attention to subject-specific vocabulary, key concepts, and important knowledge, and is designed to be both engaging and academically rigorous.

Our Bespoke Lunar Curriculum

Our unique Lunar Curriculum is inspired by Alvin Toffler’s idea that learners must “Learn, Unlearn and Relearn” to thrive in a fast-changing world. It is built around pupils’ interests to make learning meaningful, memorable, and exciting.

Key features of our Lunar Curriculum include:

  • A clear and carefully sequenced structure across year groups

  • Learning designed to build progressively over time

  • An emphasis on deepening understanding, not surface-level knowledge

  • A focus on Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS):

  • Independent enquiry

  • Creative thinking

  • Reflective learning

  • Teamwork

  • Self-management

  • Effective participation and communication

This approach ensures that our children do not just acquire knowledge — they develop the skills and mindset to become effective lifelong learners.

Coherent and Connected Learning

Curriculum content is logically sequenced to ensure smooth progression of knowledge and skills across subjects. We have carefully designed cross-curricular links where they add real value to learning, enabling children to apply concepts across different topics in meaningful ways. Our subject leaders have identified the most important knowledge and concepts within each subject, including both substantive knowledge (factual content) and disciplinary knowledge (how knowledge is used and applied). These are revisited regularly to strengthen understanding and support long-term retention.

Teaching and Assessment

Teachers present information clearly, check children's’ understanding regularly, and adapt their teaching to address misconceptions swiftly. We place a strong emphasis on formative assessment to guide planning and ensure that children are supported to stay on track.

Our approach includes:

  • Immediate intervention where needed

  • Pre-teaching and scaffolding to support access to new learning

  • A “keep up, not catch up” philosophy to close gaps quickly and effectively

  • Teachers use assessment not only to check what children know, but also to help embed learning and promote fluency in applying knowledge.

Preparing for the Future

We aim to equip our children with more than just academic knowledge. Our curriculum also helps children develop a strong sense of self, empathy for others, and a growing understanding of the wider world. We build in opportunities to explore British values and global issues, helping children to develop their social awareness and moral understanding in an age-appropriate way.Focus weeks, such as "Wide Awake to the World Week", offer rich, cross-curricular learning experiences that help children understand the world around them and their place within it.

A Thoughtfully Designed Curriculum

Although our school serves children up to Year 2, we have taken great care in structuring learning experiences that lay the strongest possible foundations for the next phase of their education. We have drawn upon educational research and expert guidance to ensure that our curriculum is robust, purposeful, and aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework and Key Stage 1 curriculum. Our curriculum promotes curiosity, builds confidence, and fosters a love of learning that we hope will stay with children throughout their lives.
