Eco Council at Blackmoor Park Infant School and Kindergarten

As part of our commitment to encouraging purposeful writing, children and their families were invited to take part in a short home writing challenge. The task was to write a brief letter explaining why they would be a good Eco Warrior. This gave children a meaningful reason to write, helping them understand that writing can be used to express ideas, opinions and aspirations.

The Eco Council is made up of children from across the school who are chosen, following their application, to create a sustainable 'eco-friendly' school. The opportunity to apply was open to all children, ensuring fairness and inclusion. Completed letters were posted into a special postbox in the school foyer.

All letters were read by Mr Naylor, Mr Cavanagh and Mr Hesketh (Health and Safety Director).

The Eco Council meets regularly with staff to share ideas, suggest improvements to school life and contribute to decisions that benefit the whole school community. Through this process, children develop confidence, communication skills and a strong sense of responsibility. This initiative also supports our work on Fundamental British Values, particularly democracy and individual liberty, by helping children understand the importance of having a voice, making choices and working together for the good of everyone.

Eco Council Litter Picking

Our Eco Council have been taking their responsibilities very seriously by helping to care for our school environment. Recently, the children organised a litter pick on the school field, working together to collect any rubbish and help keep our outdoor space clean and safe. During this activity, the Eco Council talked about the impact littering can have on our world, including how it can harm wildlife and damage our environment. They discussed the importance of looking after our planet and the role we all play in making positive choices.

Our Eco Councillors showed great teamwork and responsibility, reminding us all that small actions, like picking up litter and disposing of rubbish correctly, can make a big difference to the world around us.

Eco Council Road Safety

On what would have been Bobby Colleran’s 18th birthday, our Eco Council, alongside the Little Leadership Team, carried out a road safety survey outside our school.

The activity was a meaningful way for our children to reflect on the importance of road safety while remembering Bobby, a former pupil of Blackmoor Park Infant School. His legacy continues to remind our community why keeping children safe on our roads is so important.

During the survey, the children observed passing traffic and used tally charts to record what they saw. As part of their investigation, they kept track of the colours of cars that appeared to be travelling over the speed limit, carefully marking their findings using tallies.
