Coke & Mentos... What Could Go Wrong?

Have you ever wondered how to make rocket fuel? The adults in Reception have and we didn't need to be asked twice. With ideas of chemical reactions and propulsion in mind, the experiment was set up on the playground (to avoid any messy reactions in the classroom) and the tension started to build. First of all ten Mentos went into a tube and the countdown begun... 10,9,8... and so on, then boom, the coke erupted from the bottle in spectacular fashion and climbed through the air before running out of fizz. We then tried 12 Mentos, then 14 and finally we heaped a packet and a half into the bottle and the results were met with ooos and ahhhs. The Coke ascended higher than previous attempts, highlighting to everyone that the more Mentos the bigger the reaction.
