Narrative Immersion

January 31, 2018

When moving onto a new topic, all of the reception classes sit down and discuss PLODS. PLODS are possible lines of discussion that the children may find interesting when exploring the book that we have chosen to read. Using the different stages of the book and after hearing these interests, the Reception teachers then sit down and plan around the ideas and link them to the EYFS framework. At one point in our book (SPOILER ALERT) the Naughty Bus gets too close to his reflection in the garden pond and falls in but unlike Narcissus the bus is rescued by a recovery truck. Another stage of the book sees the bus fly through a full English breakfast, senseless waste ensues resulting in a huge mess which obviously means our Reception children are interested.

Using the idea of the truck sinking to the bottom of the pond, the children wanted to see whether the actual bus we had in class would float or sink in our water trays. Another scientific thought was that, apart from beans, what would slow our bus down when driving? All of these vocal thoughts paved the way for our experiments and the fun that was experienced by everyone.
