Linking to our narrative immersion the Reception classes are making great progress with their maths work. We are studying the different ways to measure things whether it to do with weight, length or capacity we have been encouraging the children to find the answers independently. We provided scales and balancing equipment for them to explore what in the classroom might weigh the same and looked at various reasons as to why things might weigh more (what it is made of etc). When it came to measuring the length of items in the classroom, we combined this with the power of estimation. We gave the children a row of blocks and made the children guess how many cubes long the chair leg be (for example). Again, we also looked at whether items would float or sink, requesting the children find items that did both. These are all great areas of mathematics that will steadily progress the children's understanding of not only maths and the world, but will also prompt questions from them and further build up their inquisitive minds.
